I had a new insight on this when the Missionaries where teaching us the plan of Salvation lesson for Family Home Evening tonight. The church doctrine also includes an existence as a spirit prior to birth, and before that an existence as an uncreated intelligence (similar to the aiuas in the Speaker ...

Hmm, that sounds like a good way to procrastinate going to bed.

Okay, I actually got 41 things down, in about 25 minutes. I put it on my LJ:

I think a burning desire really helps to see it through. I framed my "winner" certificate from '04 and kept it by my desk for a long time. There are ways to cheat, just like anything in life.

I previously would have said Xenocide, but I learned a lot the last time I read Speaker. But I'm hoping to read Xenocide again soon, and maybe I will like that better by the end. But there are trade-offs. The forbidden lusts didn't have the snap for me that they used to, since I realized where that ...

I did have to think about it for a second, but I do like the speaker series better. Ender's shadow has a more powerful ending, but getting there can be so painful. The scene where Ender leaves battle school, I just have to skip. I've also come to a new appreciation for Speaker, and Xenocide is my fa...

It seems like the main purpose of "best picture" is to make the winners of "best director" complain about being disrespected.

It depends on the Mormon. My view is that doing something good to get a reward is carnally minded (or being acted upon, which is captivity and death in scripture) even if that reward is not of this world. Though it is a common phrase, I don't think we can "gain" eternal life. We become ete...

NaNoWriMo 2006

I'm planning to do this again this year. I finished in 04, and even did NaNoEdMo in March of 05, but by November of 05 we were in this horrible home renovation crunch.

A couple days ago I had the idea that I wanted to try and fix up my 2004 novel during October. But we'll see.

Dear Bob, I'm so glad I'm married. Heaven forbid anything happened to my husband, I don't think I would ever date again. Though it would be kind of sad, because he doesn't like to have his picture taken or write anything. I guess I could listen to someone play Dawn of War or volunteer to do massage ...

Whether you like the "favorite poster" award may have to do with whether you see a difference between the Oscars and a beauty pageant. Not that there's anything wrong with beauty pageants per se, but it's different from a categorical type awards show.

I cleared off the desk so my husband could set up the third computer that had been sitting under the Mac desk for 6 months, and I found the mouse for it.

I forgave someone for something they had no idea hurt me.

I didn't eat as many cinnamon rolls as I could have.

I guess the question is not why God created Uranium, but why he created Lucifer.

Doesn't Uranium have some medicinal applications? Possibly to treat the cancer and hyperthyroidism that God also allows to exist?

I'm pooka and I'm an expatriate from Hatrack. I was registered around Aug 2003, but I don't know which incarnation of the board that would have been. Anyway, I think I'm going to like it here. I moved to Maryland last spring from Utah. I am old enough to have voted for Dukakis. Hmm. Can anyone else ...

(oh, and I don't include Mormons in there, but that's another story for another day) I notice you didn't include the Catholic church either. Mormons believe eternal life comes through believing on the name of Christ. Are you going to discuss it further here or take it to the Mormonism thread? Our t...

The position that there is no God has to be tenable, in my cosmology, so that we have free will. If it is impossible to disbelieve in God, there is nothing remarkable about believing in God.

Agnosticism isn't necessarily skepticism. It can be unreasoned hope despite a lack of what one considers evidence.

I read something odd in Doctrine and Covenants 45 (verse 18 ish?) about how the apostles would count the separation of their spirit from their body to be a bondage. I had just finished reading Magic Street and this struck me with a particularly odd notion I had gleaned from my studies with the Jehov...

My experience with atheists is that they tend to believe, or perhaps assume, that the workings of the universe are comprendable through science. This is a belief I can share. I would say that scientific and religious institutions sometimes respond to expediency and personal ambition that risk corrup...
