Re: The New News Thread
Oh that dismays me... Not that I've been using it as much as I wish I did, but still. It just reminds me a bit too much of the Red Mars books (which I need to finish yet... maybe I'll go to the library on Tuesday...) with massive international companies just acquiring everything for some major corpo...

Radio 4's Neverwhere
Maybe I've just missed the thread on this, but is anybody else following BBC Radio 4's dramatisation of Neverwhere?
I listened to the first episode this evening, and found it quite enjoyable, as well as duly sinister. Also, the cast is fantastic.

He's 76, so on the older side. That said, it was an old pope who instigated the biggest shake up in recent Church history, so age doesn't have to mean anything!

Bob, I just glanced at York Uni's job website and saw that there's an evening and weekend library post. And I'd love to apply for it. All the qualifications they really ask for are A levels. But if I apply for it, it'll just be one more gash in my self-esteem, one more nail in the coffin of self-wor...

Throw in ol' Maslow and I will definitely agree.
(He has been on my mind rather strongly ever since I was faced with the prospect of homelessness, which was a rather upsetting prospect and altogether too near a miss.)

Alea, part of the scenerio given was that life IS difficult to afford. To then say to follow your dream because money isn't important just sounds to me like entitled nonsense as it sounded like a blanket statement. I'm sorry for over-reacting to it.

Forget the money, money isn't worth it if you're miserable or dread facing the day. I'm sorry, that phrase really bothers me. I have spent far too much time living below the poverty line to believe it and the only way we can afford to eat and have shelter is because I work a damned job that I hate ...

I definitely agree with emphasising the value of trades and various applied learning programmes through colleges. It both directs people to careers that they may find more fulfilling than that gained through a university degree and helps fight the inflation of university degrees. Trying to reduce th...

No, but our previous letting agency wanted us out of our flat at the end of January, so I needed to find a new place to live out here. So far it is far better than where we were and the landlord is actually attentive to issues and deals with them.Rei, Did yall move back from england?

Okay, I'm not understanding why that was heresy? While I am aware of the fact that modern reasons may not have occurred to the medievals who called it a heresy, if it were permitted to spread and become a popular teaching, alcoholics would be barred from receiving communion, or their communion woul...

Re: Yes, I know Google is my friend, but I'd rather ask you.
If I recall correctly, the wine was stopped for common use to combat a heresy which stated that unless you partook of both elements, communion was not valid. The wine was chosen to be withheld instead of the bread because if you drop it, bread is easier to pick up. Then, a few hundred years later at...

Well, it's consubstantial, partaking of both the substance of the bread and wine as well as the substance of Christ, in the same way that Christ is consubstantial with the Father. Christ and the Father are distinct from each other, but they partake of the same substance (thus Christ is begotten of t...

Wait, i thought the protestants in general didn't believe in the communion with the saints... But on the topic, you mean a protestant would specifically be unable to commune in a catholic celebration (let's take, for example, an anglican, who are the protestants theologically closest to catholicism...

To what Mich said, i'd add that, if you are baptized "in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost", and if you read the catholic Creed ( here as Apostle's Creed ), understand it and agree with it, you can take the communion. Of course, the whole process of understanding the Cree...
