Re: Currently Reading / Just Read (Books/stories/whatever)
I've been reading all the Wizard of Oz books. I'm on 12 of 14. Overall, the general plot is crazy stuff goes down and life lessons are learned. I really love the Oz books. I only read the first seven, I believe. My favourite of them was The Marvelous Land of Oz. On which note, one of my favourite c...

I really can't get past the art-style of it. It's just not to my taste, which always makes it a lot harder for me to bother trying to watch it.

I really loved how Ror's dad was played.
I was a tad dismayed that the dinosaurs which looked to be velociraptors were far closer to the Jurassic Park height than to reality.

And I'm saying that I don't know what value we get out a discussion if all we're doing is throwing out competing gut-reaction hypotheses. Forgive me if I think it's a bad idea to make new laws based only on gut reactions and assumptions. Syphon, please recognise that this next statement is not a gu...

I went with the smitten kitchen one in the end as I started making it before seeing yours, Jan. That and we don't have lard but we do have butter. I adapted the sk one for a savoury pie, but I think I will try Jan's next time for it. And then I will have one for sweet pies and one for savoury. Right...

Re: We don't need no Education (thread)
Galileo gets a bit too much credit for the idea as there were several notable figures before him who promoted the heliocentric model, not the least being Copernicus and Kepler, and going back to the Ancient Greeks with (as I learned this evening from Alison and a friend) Aristarchus. Also, I'm reaso...

Re: Nerds or Geeks?
These are my reading glasses. I kind of love them in their slightly antiquated design. As for things getting popular, I think I just get a bit worried when I see historically geeky things being merchandised in major stores like Urban Outfitters and the like. Some part of me worries that by making g...

Re: Nerds or Geeks?
EL were talking about "geekiness" today, and noticing that it sometimes feels like it has become popular and companies are responding to that somewhat (an offhand example being Prada doing steampunk). Some part of me wonders if this doesn't mean the death of being geeky as we used to under...

For myself, I'm waiting indefinitely. In my situation it isn't worth the strain on my relationship with my parents, whom I've already put considerable strain on in the past decade. That said, I'm sure our Naomi will accidentally make it notably more pressing once she learns to speak, but for now I p...

Many animals are self-aware. Whales and apes play jokes on each other. I don't mean that whales play jokes on apes, or that apes play jokes on whales, but... Actually, whales and apes DO play jokes on each other. The Orcas at Sea-World, on their own volition, will squirt water on their trainers (an...

Re: Can you guys help with a dilema?
There is definitely something to be said for waiting at least for a time to be more comfortable with yourself. That time may be a year, may be less, may be more, and you may not ever hit a state of being perfectly comfortable with yourself. So long as you are not currently dating a boy, the subject ...

I'm definitely with JL here. I am focusing on the States because it is the States which is so gun crazy. And by and large, we don't have nearly so much in the way of wanton acts of violence in Canada. I am okay with self-defence, but I fail to see why a gun is so necessary for that. It is a mark of either a wildly dangerous soc...
