Re: The Race Relations/Diversity/Equality Thread

All of these news stories over the past number of years have really been feeding a strong anti-America bias in me. I cannot fathom how a country which makes such suggestions seriously (and sometimes even passes laws) about women and immigrants (legal or illegal) and non-white people is meant to be n...

Oi, Arizona... I'm really baffled how the government thought it'd be easier to get every company to fund healthcare instead of just funding it themselves through taxes. It'd at least cut out the issue of people whining about what they have to include in a plan and defending it with some cobbled defi...

I love that this current show will be over tonight.

I love that my character in Merry Wives is described as Eeyore, a drunk Eeyore.

Historically they were the result of failing to trim the edges of the sheet which was folded and cut into pages (if you look at older books you will sometimes find pages that haven't yet been cut apart). Today they are, I presume, an attempt at looking old-timey.

At no point have I been speaking about liberty. That would be you, and I think the stakes are far higher than individual rights at all costs (hard to accept, I know). I am also not speaking about poverty, although I pulled up that example because the poor are one of the first groups who would be aff...

I can reconcile sapience with a "father knows best" mindset (as you put it) because people are cruel and have a hard time walking a mile in someone else's shoes. You say there would be no reduction of personhood, but how long would it take to see a person begging for money and overhear som...

a competitive market for organs I'll be honest, this phrase is for me a sufficiently compelling reason against it. It reduces human beings down to individual components which may be auctioned off at will instead of treating people as living, sapient creatures in their entirety. To view humans as or...

I just finished reading The Return of the King. And the ending always makes me feel so, so very sad. One feels very much like Sam, left by the master they love on the shore and then have to go back to living life for a time.

Re: The Race Relations/Diversity/Equality Thread

I'm sorry, I think you are wrong. It isn't just a discussion about the meaning of the word "should" although that may play into it. It's a discussion about equality between men and women and the prejudices that are faced and reinforced Every. Single. Day. in our society. In our workplaces....

Hmmm, I don't think I asked if you care if that man wants to wear that dress. I'm pretty sure I asked if you think that man " should be wearing " that dress. Which is a question focused on your opinion, not his. And that question was more generalized to men in general wearing dresses. Non...

I would argue what I have heard (possibly here, possibly elsewhere, I have forgotten): Until it is acceptable for men to participate in things that are feminine, we will not have gender equality. As things currently stand, as good as it has been that women are able to participate in masculine things...

Re: Relax, Don't Worry, Have a Homebrew

I cracked open a bottle last night. It tastes pretty good, although, as expected, strongly of treacle. It's not as fizzy as would be nice, so I suspect I didn't bottle it soon enough. It also did not have very much alcohol, which is not necessarily a bad thing, although I managed to down an entire 7...

It's been a few years since I've seen it, but my memory of the ape costumes was that they were pretty good, all things considered.

Freakiest moment ever when I was 8 years old, though, was when they woke up near the beginning and saw the female crew member all... whatever she was.

I had a professor who told me what he likes to do is hand plagiarised papers back to the student with the citation of where they took their stuff written across the top. Then he usually gives them a very short but possible time to hand in their own work.
