Re: General Filming/Production Update Thread
I suppose a delay might be inevitable, but production started in February. I don't know much about the film making process, but surely they must be far enough along that scraping the film outright is unlikely, right? Other companies have invested too much time and money to get nothing in return. May...

Re: General Filming/Production Update Thread
I know nothing about how these things usually play out, but all of the sites that report DD's bankruptcy still state EG's expected release as Nov 2013. That may just be for lack of any official statement to the contrary, but maybe this isn't a deal breaker.

Re: Currently Reading / Just Read (Books/stories/whatever)
Xenocide has always been my favourite aside from EG itself. I remember enjoying it so thoroughly the first time I read it that as soon as I finished I immediately went out to purchase a copy of CotM because I couldn't wait to continue the story.

Re: TV in General - Rants, Reviews, Etc.
I don't know about that. I'm still finding it pretty awesome. Few shows pull off suspense so well. I'm not sure how to describe how I feel about Walt. You're right, he's become pretty unsympathetic, but he's fascinating because we've watched every step of how he got that way. I can't wait to see how...

Re: We don't need no Education (thread)
If test scores don't have much of an effect on funding then what's the incentive behind these cheating incidents? This recent example may have been one teacher's poor judgment, but last year in Atlanta involved hundreds of board employees. I'm not asking rhetorically, I'm really trying to understand...

I posted that video before but I see nothing wrong with posting it again for those who missed it. I actually sympathize with the teacher. If they don't work, refuse to work, and no one at their homes makes them work, what is she going to do? Fail them all? that would probably get her fired...

Jan, I assure you that was in no way an influential factor in my decision to purchase this automobile...It's kinda...Batmobile-esque.
Really, I wasn't even intending to go for black, it's just what happened to be available, and it was a good deal.

I haven't checked.
I'm open to suggestions for either. Or something gender neutral and bad-ass, like (Millennium) Falcon, but more original. Yeah, I know I'm a dork.
Maybe "Ninja" because it's black...

I also disagree with the idea that being "white-washed" or an "oreo" means you're not showing signs of your roots. Well, specifically with African American culture, it means.... you're not showing signs of African-American culture. Which aren't the roots(to the degree that I mea...

Re: The Race Relations/Diversity/Equality Thread
I think there's a double standard. If you're white, you get to be just Canadian/American. If you're more "ethnic" you're considered an "oreo" or "white-washed" or whatever term applies to your particular denomination if you don't show signs of your roots.

Re: The Race Relations/Diversity/Equality Thread
I think that a lot of groups tend to have this sort of rivalry, I guess you could call it, with closely related groups. I have Chinese friends who talk about this kind of thing with mainland Chinese versus Hong Kong natives, or Cantonese speakers vs Mandarin. I also know Europeans, in particular an ...

I'm sorry, Jason. I didn't mean to be snippy. (I've grown a little tired of being taken out of context, having words put in my mouth and being told to defend straw men.) Re: Gun Control
I'm not really concerned about the outcome of whether the populace is armed or unarmed. It's more about process than outcomes. For me, as a natural-rights liberal, it comes down to the presumption of liberty. I took only one political science course in university, a comparative study of North Ameri...

But in a way schools are a microcosm of society. Doesn't the same argument, that bad people will have guns regardless, so good people should be allowed to have them for protection, apply?

Well said, Kirsten. :D I can't recall if I've said all of this before, but aside from genetics, evolution is my favourite topic to teach in biology. You didn't answer my question though. Regardless of legal responsibility or lack thereof, would you expect a police officer to assist you if he witnessed you being threatened? Prim is drawn for the Games > Katniss takes her place > Katniss defies Capitol and becomes face of rebellion > rebellion ends but Prim is dead, thus... the whole thing was, in essence, to save Prim from the Games and she ended up dying anyway = pointless story. The law has been clear for quite some time, here: the police are under no legal duty to protect a person from harm. You're the legal expert here, but that sounds to me like a "cover your ass" law to cover cops from having to throw themselves in front of buses to save people. Do you person...

especially given the fact that the police have no legal duty to protect them. This is sarcasm, right?
