Re: The Race Relations/Diversity/Equality Thread

I had never heard of the phrase "anti-racist is a codeword for anti-white" until this weekend when this sign was apparently taken down. I think I was a bit happier until then. I do dislike the official reason for the sign being taken down. Does that mean that it's legal for large, non-dist...

Re: Doctor Who (yarr, there be spoilers here!)

So I'm seeing a lot of calls for a female Doctor. It wouldn't really surprise me, or upset or annoy me in any way, if they had picked a woman to play the role, but I guess I don't see it as something necessary. It would be like casting a woman for the next Bond role, or an American Doctor. But I'm c...

As far as I know, "going out" is still in. But I'm not in high school, middle school, or even college any more, so maybe the cool kids all stopped that?

I know a lot of people hate River, but I love her.
For us River-haters, most of the time it feels like everyone else loves her. So there are many people (like my girlfriend) that absolutely love her, and you are not alone!

I think it's fine to be uncertain and to take your time coming to the point where you are certain, one way or another. :)
Absolutely. Simply said, but really the best way to put it.

EAGLE, what do you mean the Kindle version sucks? What's wrong with it?
Yeah, actually, that's an important question. What's wrong with it? Were the linebreaks messed up, or the chapter headings or something?

I've heard that it's already hitting the top of the bestseller's list, so chances are someone here has read it. The plot sounds pretty standard with a few interesting twists, but I haven't read anything by her that isn't Harry Potter, so I don't really have the faith built up in her as a writer of o...

Also Vector! It's in the "react as your character runs" style of genre. No idea what to call it. But it's fun and it looks good and the levels really start opening up after a few of them.

Re: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A

Nimble Quest is a fun take on the classic Snake game, where you form a snake out of a number of RPG classes, pick up gems, and kill monsters and NPCs. It's difficult to explain, and also free. Star Traders RPG is kind of a Roguelike spaceship type game thing. Very easy to pick up and put down, but ...

New confession! And a meta confession. I feel kind of like a traitor for not picking the trailer apart and just basking in enjoyment that it did, in fact, come out. Just wanted you all to know. It's not an end of an era or anything like that, and it won't change my own participation here. So I'm jus...

Re: Currently Reading / Just Read (Books/stories/whatever)

Edgewood , the first book in a YA series that was free on Kindle, has been sitting on my computer for a few months, and I finally bit into it. It was pretty good, and actually reminds me of my favorite YA series growing up: Animorphs . Although it is slightly better written, in terms of language an...

I just finished reading the third Earthsea novel, and I am quite tempted to stop there. It finished quite nicely as I suspected it would such that, for the time being, I feel no need to read the other books which followed decades later. This is exactly what happened to me a few years ago. It felt w...

Re: Yes, I know Google is my friend, but I'd rather ask you.

So Neil Gaiman is coming to Portland for his latest (and apparently last(!)) book tour, and, as the venue is literally down the street from me, I had to get a ticket. Had to. No questions. Neil is the reason that I read comics and is also a pretty good author, in my opinion. If I had to be super-hon...
