Re: ENDER'S GAME Blu Ray/DVD coming Feb. 11th!
Watched the Blu Ray this past weekend. I still think the movie was great, but I wasn't overly impressed by the deleted/extended scenes. The other special featurettes weren't anything to write home about either, but I never really care that much about special features anyway. One thing of note is tha...

Re: Enders Game Series: A Way to Think
I'm not sure I can state anything specific, but the Ender books along with other sci-fi masterpieces such as Dune and the Foundation trilogy that I read in my teens shaped the way I think in a lot of ways.

Re: "I HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE AND I MUST TALK ABOUT IT" Thread
It's a matter of conservation of details. Special relativity is not something that most people understand easily. You can't dwell on what you know from the books or what it means for the rest of the series that may or may not get adapted. Since it wasn't needed to explain Mazer still being alive, an...

Yes. From the Formic's perspective, Earth was just occupied by drones, and killing drones is like clipping toe nails.

Re: Riddles in the Dark
I haven't even seen it yet, but every review I've heard from Tolkien scholars and the set of film reviewers whose opinions I trust has been overwhelmingly negative. "Highlights" thus far have been: * Gandalf's staff getting broken again (F*** YOU PETER JACKSON) * Orcs have "morgul ar...

How has this thread not been bumped yet? Anyway, I'll be seeing Part 2 tonight. In the meantime, there's this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzD12qo1knM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; In most ways the Hobbit films just can't match LotR. The latter series just has a deeper,...

Re: Earth Afire
Yeah. This prequel trilogy isn't bad, but the only Enderverse book that I REALLY want to read is "Shadows Alive" (or whatever he ends up calling it). Anything else is just filler and is starting to dilute the greatness of the original saga.

Re: "I HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE AND I MUST TALK ABOUT IT" Thread
I went in with very low expectations and actually came out feeling pleasantly surprised. There were a lot of flaws, of course, but more than anything when walking out of the theatre I wanted to start rereading the book immediately--not because the movie was wretched, but because it reminded me of h...

Re: "I HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE AND I MUST TALK ABOUT IT" Thread
Even the book doesn't doesn't depict the Jeesh as being indifferent to failures in the "simulations". You may be right that it would have made the reveal pack more punch, but you can't expect the audience to just sit through a big dramatic battle sequence in the final act of the film that ...

Re: "I HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE AND I MUST TALK ABOUT IT" Thread
The reaction seemed reasonable to me considering that even if it is just a simulation, it's not just a "game". Even in the book, Ender was quite determined that he could not lose, EVER, because he knew what is at stake. It's more like totally bombing an important exam than just getting fra...

Aside from the specific instances that I mention in my initial post, I felt that they did a pretty good job of capturing Ender's character. The empathy and compassion were there.

Re: "I HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE AND I MUST TALK ABOUT IT" Thread
Um, there didn't need to be an explanation for Mazer being alive since they had that the invasion was only 50 years ago. Ben Kingsley us nearly 70, so I figured that Mazer is around 70ish and he was probably just a young man in his 20s during the invasion. He's alive due to the totally mundane reaso...

Re: So, when do we get Ender's Game II
I've never really seen any viable sequel options for this regardless of how well it is received. There's no set up to continue with the Shadow books, and the Speaker books are way too contemplative and slow paced to make for big screen blockbusters.

Re: "I HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE AND I MUST TALK ABOUT IT" Thread
I have waited so long to be able to say this: I have seen the Ender's Game movie, and I am not disappointed. For the most part, I felt that the changes and omissions made sense. The only ones that I found questionable are Ender's general attitude toward being "the one", and Bonzo. For the ...

Re: We don't need no Education (thread)
So here's one of the problems in education and maybe society in general in my opinion: kids don't learn how to accept failure, or even disappointment! I came across this today: Calgary school ends honour roll program because of hurt feelings I'm a high school teacher, and I've failed my fair share o...

Re: The Hive Queen and the Hegemon
Welcome to pweb!
No, The Hive Queen and The Hegemon have never actually been published, which I think is probably for the best, since it would be impossible to create texts that live up to their cultural significance within the Enderverse.

Yeah, I can actually understand why people would be taken aback by a black Asgardian, considering that they are supposed to be the Norse gods. It would be weird to have a white guy play an Africa deity too. Some people blew it way out of proportion though.

I guess living just outside one of the most diverse cities in the world has given me a skewed perception of things. Re: A question of Jane's intentions
That's one aspect of the plot that never made much sense to me either. The only rationale I can come up with is that it forced the Lusitanians into trusting and working with Ender, and Starways Congress would have found out eventually anyway. The evidence was there, Jane just pointed it out. But you...
