Re: Yes, I know Google is my friend, but I'd rather ask you.
I find that the easiest way to get Windows 8 to look and operate like Windows 7 is just to ignore Metro (the tiles) and just go to the desktop. Seriously, metro is just a full screen version of the old Start menu, but the Windows 8 desktop looks and functions exactly like the Windows 7 version witho...

Re: Gun Control
I'll just say that there's a difference between someone wielding a gun in their home for defense of one's own family and property and having one present at all times in a classroom with 30 unpredictable kids. I'd sooner have a gun in my home than in my classroom.

Interesting... And by "interesting" I mean ridiculous: Utah Teachers Trained to Use Guns Sounds intelligent enough to me, as long as they keep up to date on their training. The problem is that teachers are not cops, and some "intro to guns" course isn't going to make them react ...

Re: The Race Relations/Diversity/Equality Thread
The joke was definitely in poor taste, but before I personally take offense over things like this, I consider whether the people behind it are genuinely racist, or they just thought (however mistakenly) that they were being funny. In this case I think it's the latter. I think that the apology is suf...

Re: Periodic Movie Review
I agree about trimming the action scenes, but as for the Thorin/Azog subplot, I think that this part of the story benefited from having a main antagonist. And there'll probably be a great final showdown between them in the Battle of Five Armies.

Re: Periodic Movie Review
My random thoughts about The Hobbit: - It was good, but not amazing. - The biggest problem was the length. I believe it's about 15-20 minutes shy of 3 hours, which of course makes it shorter than any of the LotR films, but there's less story to tell here. I think most people who are familiar with Th...

Re: Things that I hate
All I have to say to that is that teachers aren't cops, and most of us would not feel comfortable or safer with guns in our classrooms.
If the teachers in that school had been armed and trained to use a gun, this would have ended very differently.

Re: Periodic Movie Review
I'm seeing The Hobbit tonight so I can't comment yet, but given the weaker source material I've never expected The Hobbit films to be as good as LotR.

Yeah, that's pretty much the answer I was expecting. The thing is, I have lost pretty much everything to do with my router. That is, the manual, the set up CD, administrator passwords... everything. And believe me, I NEVER lose this stuff. I still have discs and manuals for devices I got rid of year...

Re: Yes, I know Google is my friend, but I'd rather ask you.
I've got a challenge for our technically inclined members. My google-fu is pretty good, if I do say so myself, but I've had surprisingly little success finding a solution to this: I just got a new Windows 8 laptop. I'm loving it so far except for one rather big problem. Apparently Win8 doesn't allow...

Re: General Filming/Production Update Thread
I've got several. That is, more than a few, but less than dozens. The point is, for every one of us, there's a lot more EG fans out there who haven't found their way to pweb or hatrack. Hell, it's required reading at the school I teach at, so there's at least a couple of thousand kids in my area who...

Re: General Filming/Production Update Thread
Unless, of course, someone from ONE of the SIX Production Companies wants to release some sort of teaser to prove that they are on target. While it would be reassuring, I still think it's early to get antsy about the lack of a trailer. It's still almost a year until November, and many movies don't ...

I've read The Lord of the Rings several times over the years, but I've actually only read The Hobbit once. In preparation for the first film (which I already have reserved seats for) I will now read it again for the first time since high school.

Which is actually pretty sad when you consider that the brain doesn't even totally finish developing until around 20-21, so we basically get about an 8 year window when our brains are at their peak, and so many people do their best to wreak it with drugs and alcohol during those years.

I'm definitely talking about non-tongue in cheek references here.
I often give "back in my day..." speeches to my students to emphasize how "old" I am.

Irrational irritation: when people my age (I'm a couple of weeks shy of 29) go on about "getting old". Recent examples include a facebook status which reads, "was asked if I'm over 25 when buying a lottery ticket... Made my day!" This person is 29, it's not an amazing feat to pas...

I think you'll lose that bet. That would be rather early for a trailer even if everything was going well, wouldn't it?
I'm still betting that they attach a trailer to the Twilight movie com November.

But they won't be thrown away! They'll still be there, waiting to be read and enjoyed. I understand that, and I've made that point to other EU fans who are more upset at the prospect than I am. But it won't be the same knowing that these stories simply don't count within the larger mythos anymore. ...

Re: Star Wars
Also the EU-ness of having Jedi marry doesn't exactly square with the prequel trilogy Jedi-don't-love storyline. That could be explained pretty quickly as one of Luke's decisions in founding the new order. Yeah, this has been addressed in the EU. Luke founded a New Jedi Order. Emphasis on the new ....
