Re: So long, Ender's Game!

true... people do tend to get on their soapboxes at the most incredible (senseless) times... Actually, it baffles me sometimes. I cannot reconcile the intense dislike and negative actions of someone for those whose opinion differs from their own ... with the intense dislike and actions of people who...

Re: So long, Ender's Game!

Nobody has even mentioned this controversy. It may have to do with the promotion aspect of the movie. I think it's probably "old news" to many of us here, and I think, at least personally, that we've accepted the fact that authors are people too, and they can have and express their own po...

Re: The Smells in My Kitchen

well, bread is one of those "infinite variations" kinds of things, sort of like chili. :D Do you have any particular "goal" with the bread? - are you making it to save money? - are you making it to be more healthy? - are you making it to taste extraordinary? - are you making it s...

Re: invisible bookshelf

how about a Murphy bed that folds up into a book shelf, kinda like taking books under the bed to a new level
Personally, I'd prefer the "hidden bed behind the bookshelf" ... you'd open the bookshelf like doors and there's your Murphy bed behind it!

Re: Brains or Beauty?

Well, it's no secret that many of us already consider ourselves well-gifted in the brains department. true. Most of the local crowd (self included) likely consider themselves to be smarter-than-the-average-bear. Which means, if we feel we need any enhancement, it's better use is going to ...

As unsavory as keeping logs can be, and as repulsive as "mandatory fun" (like reading) can be, you might as well get used to both... even if they seem to serve no useful benefit now, they are actually "excellent real-life models." :( Just think of all those people (especially emp...

OH... sentient... the title of the thread is apparently misspelled. :( I think you can change that though.

I think, as far as "how we can define sentient" goes, though... I'd say "any being that is clearly aware of itself and able to ask questions concerning its existence."

I love the smell of homebuilt smoked german sausage! Just nuked a piece I just grabbed out of the smokehouse. I think (and hope) that it would not be too difficult to persuade the audience that this group of teens was extraordinarily brilliant, just by choosing a few choice "academic scenes" where they're solving extreme 3-D (or more) math or engineering problems, for example. I also understand wh...

Re: When did you read Enders Game

I read it within a year or two of it coming out... so my age was never an issue: I was already over 18.

However, I read it aloud to campers who were about 10-12... and I certainly didn't think it was inappropriate. TV and movies and even games are at LEAST as violent, usually even more so.

I'd be afraid to even pretend to TRY to take a test where they ask ages... that is not the sort of thing I pay much attention to while reading, and it's been - oh, I don't know - probably a DECADE since I read it! :D I have gotten it out again, though, and I *will* read it before the movie release. ...

Sorta like Petra456, I have 2 siblings (total 3), but unlike her, I don't think it was the greatest number. Even numbers of kids are best, I'm convinced. Odd numbers leave the odd man out. Growing up, any two of us could play quite nicely together, but add the third, and it was total chaos. I rememb...

Another "common" error is to squeeze the bag when you're done... that dumps all the "trapped" tannins into the tea, adding to that bitterness! I think we Americans (and our tea-party brothers, the Brits) tend to brew our tea much stronger than many other places I've visited. Else...
