Re: Guilty Pleasures and Irrational Irritations

Irrational Irritation: The term "tween." Or maybe I just find tweens irritating in general and am channeling it all towards the term. I take it as a sign that I am now old and crotchety that I invented the term "tweenty" for collegeish 'kids who think they know it all. ;) I didn...

I finished The Storytelling Animal, excellent read! Neuroscience, Psychology and the human impulse for storytelling all wrapped up in one piece of scholarship. :D

Re: The Smells in My Kitchen

last night we made roast trout with autumn squash and an orangey-pecan-roasted-garlic tapenade. the recipe is from my favorite cookbook for fish, Cod and Country. The recipe suggested Kabucha, but we had Butternut, wish we'd had the tastier kabucha, and I think I overcooked the squash. in any event,...

Re: Periodic Movie Review

Singin in the Rain is still all sorts of awesome and the new bluray is staggering and well done, I've seen it in the theatre half a dozen times and it's always looked good, but never this good.

Re: Riddles in the Dark

hehe, i could never get past like 25% into the Silmarillion, but on the other hand, The Hobbit was a very beautiful read to me. Guess which one holds more literary merit in my opinion ;) That's true for me too. On the other hand, I tried to read the Silmarillion at 13, which is not a very good age ...

Re: Riddles in the Dark

Tolkien apologists definitely defend him; they especially advocate for greater acceptance/appreciation of his merits on literary grounds. They pretty much universally use Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion as the basis of all their advocacy and the Hobbit is mostly ignored. Since the film trilog...

Argo - 10 of 10 Hell yes. One of the best movies of the year. Insanely entertaining, increcdibly tense, fantastic storytelling, superb acting, great script and stupendous technical qualities, just a tremendously great movie. like Brave, this is better than any 2011 movie (best movies of 2011, were i...

Re: Currently Reading / Just Read (Books/stories/whatever)

I find it tremendously irritating that while most of Pern is available on the kindle, the Harper Hall trilogy is not. :(

If I buy and download the kindle edition from amazon.co.uk can I then load it onto my kindle?

Riddles in the Dark

so I came across two links today that made me realize we need a Hobbit Thread. The first is some very intelligent fellow encouraging everyone to reread the Hobbit before the movie, because they will be surprised to discover that it is not as lacking in literary merit as the Tolkien apologists (who i...

Re: MOCKINGJAY spoilers

So I read the Hunger Games in a few weeks after I started it. I'd already seen the movie. I thought the book, like the movie, was relatively cute. An interesting 'safe' variant of Battle Royale where the protagonist doesn't really have to kill anyone despite being well-equipped with skills that woul...

I don't know why I keep reading the Todd McCaffrey/Anne McCaffrey Pern collaborations. They just aren't the same.
I think I'm now going to have to kindle the harper hall series. man those books are fun reads.

I'm curious how differently they built the sets considering they were singing on set, and how they recorded the sound, was probably a crazily complex construction. I came by today to post that extended first look. They gave us samples of the singing of all the expected oscar nominees (Jackman, Hatha...

Finished Catching Fire, aside from the disappointment of basically jumping into a very similar formula (and oh my Katniss is stupid if she didn't know how Gale felt, lol) as the first book, the second games were a fascinating revisit of similar material, interesting to see her in a group setting. Re: LEGOs in Your (Read: My old) Library

Man, a little bummed. The library dropped from a high of 12 to somewhere in the 20s. If every member of that community voted even just once, it would blow every last library out of the water (thus far). Damn apathetic people (in some cases...in others it's lack of computer). Make a QR code that tak...

Being on the other side of the fence is hard. I'm in contract negotiations right now with WH. I feel the pull of dual allegiances, and I know I need to c...

Lard makes the best pie crust. Better than butter. Healthier too. (more mono-unsaturated fat and oleic acid in lard). Better melting point for cooking than butter or shortening, more mono-unsaturated fat than shortening, low poly-unsaturated fat than shortening (the really bad s*** to ingest, especi...

TG, Well, but of course the human mind is a biochemical SOMETHING. As best as we can currently label it, it's fair enough to call it a computer. There's something in the music progression leading into the first chorus of Call Me Maybe that reminds me of Never Gonna Give You Up (RickRoll) in a really dejavu sort of way.
