If you honestly don't see why the fable of the prostitute in the gang - rape refrigerator and her magical poisonous vagina is anti-feminist, I just don't know what I can say to convince you.

Re: Jayelle's Day in the Life

The thing to know about the Honey Bunches of Oats is that Jayelle bought TWO kinds (one with almonds, one without) and every morning Ginny specifies which one she wants. It's the most ridiculous example of false choice. "Would you like Honey Bunches of Oats, or Honey Bunches of Oats WITH ALMOND...

Re: A Dissertation Story

Okay. So as I said before I need to have three reading lists for three exams to be written sometime around December/January. My theory advisor was impressed by my current list, so I think that one is set! My Middle English advisor and my Old English advisor are both happy with my list for them, so I...

Re: A Dissertation Story

Okay, so I've reread le Morte Darthur and my examination committee was approved. For my three exams, one on Middle English, one on 16th century (ie early Renaissance/Reformation), one on theory, I have five supervisors who must all approve my reading lists for all three exams. This committee is made...

Re: A Dissertation Story

So since I'm here. As Jan said, my thesis proposal has now been approved. That means that I'm officially allowed to start preparing for comprehensive exams. At my university comprehensive exams for English PhDs work like this: I write one four-hour exam and two three-hour exams, most likely on a Mon...

I said: "Is this meant to have the processes for comprehensive exams? I think you have accidentally attached the wrong pdf." Then I mentally added: it could happen to anyone. Like me. Like how it happened to me and you were completely uncivil about it.

Re: Apocalyptic Film Festival!

Just watched "Omega Man" for the second movie of APFF. I really enjoyed it, though there were some ... logical inconsistencies. The cause of the apocalypse is once again humanity itself, though the emphasis this time was placed more on hubris than on violent tendencies. Anyone else seen it...

Re: Apocalyptic Film Festival!

Okay, we just watched Planet of the Apes. I'd never actually seen it before. It was better than I thought it would be, though obviously the ape costumes were pretty sad. The main message--which should surprise no-one, even if you've never seen it--is that "man" will be the cause of our own...

Bumpity bump bump. Anybody know anything about cars? You don't seem to have helped starlooker much, but maybe I'll do better. As you probably know, our car was stolen just after Christmas. We sent it to the dealer to get the ignition (which had been bashed out) replaced. When finally finally got it ...

Re: We don't need no Education (thread)

In my 1st year university class (which is in Newfoundland, btw), this is how I do it: If students hand in a plagerized essay, I give them a 0. If they come to me and ask me for a second chance, I will let them rewrite it, and hand it in again, and will give them the grade minus 5% per day it has bee...

Okay cats and kittens. It's 2012, which means the world is ending. So let's watch end-of-the-world movies! Jan and I are having friends over every two weeks to watch apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic movies. I'll let you know here what we're going to be watching, and then you can play too if you want...

[English Professor]All kinds of writing and all permutations of sentences are useful in their place. The passive voice is, as the name suggests, passive. It is usually weaker and it is always less direct. Writing is almost always better if it is more active, more engaging, more direct, and more clea...

I could swear I've voted already. I like Fluttershy. Even her sneezes are graceful.

Also, I have very limited exposure to 4chan, but considering what they allow (and even encourage) there, I find it mind-boggling that My Little Pony is a problem.

Okay techie folks. I am building my first computer from scratch parts. All I need is a fairly basic computer for internetting, but I'd also like it to be my tv. So I want to be able to watch HD video, and I don't need to be able to play high-performance games or anything. This is what I'm thinking: ...

I'd say that for Dylan you could probably rephrase it as "Don't criticize without trying to understand".

See, my inclination is to respond to that Bob Dylan parody by quoting Bob Dylan: "Don't criticize what you can't understand".
