I need help finding a passage. PWEB ASSEMBLE!
I need to find the passage in which Valentine (I think it was her) is describing philotes. The one I am looking for is the one in which the character describes lovers lying next to each-other feeling as though they were one, and that actually being the case because of philotic bonding. Unfortunately...

Ha ha ha. I imagine you are quite lost. I moved this over from the EnderVerse forum. It came from thread in which we were discussing EiE. Are you talking about themes in literature? Metaphors that run throughout the work? Yes. Whether or not themes belong in books? Whether themes make books better o...

The author's influences would always seep in unconsciously unless they were extremely good at getting rid of them. Actually, now that I think about it, I remember being absolutely floored that OSC could write so convincingly the views of an Atheist character (Bean) for so long. I guess that is more...

This particular branch of the discussion began when someone was complaining that the motif of family life made him apprehensive about the Shadow series and EiE because a book having a motif reminded him of reading done in school. My initial point was that the reason you read a lot of books with moti...

Okay, so you read and analyze some books in school because they remain relevant to contemporary social matters, and others because they have a timeless appeal. That's fair enough, but I don't really see what point you're trying to make or what you mean to discuss. :? I mean to discuss the reasons f...

I heartily disagree. But as this is pretty far off-topic, let's continue the discussion here: http://www.philoticweb.net/phpBB2/viewt ... 8565#58565wth? You read books with motifs in school because then you can analyze their effect on society and such.

wth? You read books with motifs in school because then you can analyze their effect on society and such. I disagree. I mean, sure the more blatant books like Animal Farm and Crime and Punishment are important with regards to world events and opinions in the time periods in which they were published...

I'm a Buddhist, and I participate in a Sunday morning discussion group that we call Sangha. It is basically a group in which we discuss various aspects of Buddhism, what they mean to us, and how they apply to the world around us. Being the youngest in the group (a ripe, virile 21), not to mention by...

Not every person WANTS to get married and have babies Humans are in a unique evolutionary position. We are the only creatures to have thrown off the shackles of natural environment. We no longer have to evolve to survive in the harsh natural world, because our environment is the culture in which we...

All of the nagging and lecturing took away from the plot. There WAS no plot, just OSC taking over characters to nag about marriage and children and monogamy.   How exactly would you define plot? My dictionary calls it a sequence of events in a narrative. Sounds like it could be used...

You try to convine your wife to name your first child Andrew. She knows why and refuses. Ah... the names that I have suggested to my wife...If only she didn't know me so well, I might have chosen from Bruce, Richard, Andrew, Julian, Harold, Peter, Tim, Malcolm... I only got Gabriel to be considered...

I can't believe I am getting sucked into this. I usually try to avoid these kinds of things. Disclaimer: I've never read Artemis fowl. All that I know about it comes from what I have read in the posts in this thread. I just think that he realized how impossible it was to survive, and that their was ...

I remember the first time I read through the Speaker series. Every time it talked about how much someone revered The Hive Queen and the Hegemon, or referenced how it had become the equivalent of a classic piece of literature, I wished that it were a real book that I could read. I kept thinking that ...

The Hive Queens do have some regard for individual life, as Valentine points out in CotM. They are, however, more willing to sacrifice individual lives for the good of the species than most humans tend to be. They already had the cocooned Hive Queen hidden on their other world for Ender to find. If ...

In what order should they be read?
My girlfriend recently asked me to read the EnderVerse novels to her. (Part of this thing that we have started doing in which we read our favorite books aloud to each other -- lots of fun, and can be quite romantic when combined with a bottle of wine and an evening-in together.) Anyway, I went ahead...
