Re: Question on Xenocide

I'm don't want to have to start a new topic, so I plan to hijack this thread instead. I'm partway through Xenocide for the first time in more than 10 years, and several thoughts occur to me. It seems to me that while Xenocide has many interesting aspects in it, including a massive moral dilemma of ...

Re: EARTH UNAWARE [The Spoiler Thread]

You nailed it, neo-dragon. That's one of the things I really liked about this book. The sense of isolation felt by El Cavador is thick and oppressive and never, ever goes away.

I think the only other Sci-Fi franchise I've seen tackle that is Battlestar Galactica. And maybe Firefly.

Re: EARTH UNAWARE [The Spoiler Thread]

I understand that. But it's like they spent so much time and effort setting up the next two books that they forgot to tell an actual story in this one. And quite frankly, that pisses me off, because it's such a cynical, ham-fisted, publisher-driven strategy to sell one book for the price of three.

Re: Ender's aiua split (caution spoilers)

Yes it's retelling (but also clarifying I hope) the books. The first time I went through the books, I had a very hard time understanding how Jane came to be, and I only grokked it quite recently. So I wanted to try to help clarify it for others.

Re: Ender's aiwa split

Uh-oh, essay time again! ;) In Xenocide , the Hive Queen went into detail about how the Formics tried to reach out to Ender. They noticed Ender subconsciously calling bugger-like philotes in from the Outside as he endlessly studied the Second Invasion videos in Battle School. They thought "hey,...

Re: Can we have a Hunger Games Movie thread?

Just saw the movie last weekend. Haven't read the books, so I don't have that perspective. That said... I went in expecting a fantasy sci-fi Battle Royale mixed with Survivor and was largely pleased with what I got. I found it horribly cliched at times (did Haymitch really have to be drunk? How awfu...

I agree that Ender's abilities were natural and borne of his environment and training while Bean's abilities were the result of laboratory fabrication, not natural at all. Really wigginboy? I'm afraid I have to disagree with you, Taft. While the Ender books were definitely concerned with "higher matters" such as philosophy, morality, sentience, humanity and so on, I did enjoy the Shadow books enormously. I haven't read SiF but I have to say, it was the concept of war and tac...

I had an op-ed in a national paper, today.
You can't just say something like that and not make with the linkage. That breaks all sorts of netiquette.

Yes, I said "netiquette". I am also fully aware that it is, in fact, the 21st century. What of it? :P

Lengthy speech but I do agree with you on pretty much every point. However, I want to go back to a previous point in this thread (if that's ok) and say that the tension between Novinha and Ender was much fanned by the death of Quim. She couldn't have let him go because a large part of her animosity...

Maybe SiF contradicts this, I haven't got the audio book yet. At the end of SotG, they said that they would send Volesku (hope i spelled it right) off to do genetic research in space. He would be sent off with and used by a colony. Given that he was nuts and obsessed with what he saw as improving s...

Gifts was actually alright, if only because it was designed and marketed as the novella it was always supposed to be. You go in knowing you're going to get a nice little vignette, and that's exactly what you get.

Ender's aiua, ultimately, had one absolutely overwhelming motivation throughout the entire Speaker trilogy: to prevent humans from destroying other sentient life the way they tried to destroy the Formics. That's what his aiua needed to do more than anything. Another, smaller part of his aiua loved N...

But the whole point is Ender isn't dead. He's just in two bodies now. And he simply didn't want the old body any more.
