There is a difference between accepting a belief as valid--or even as reasonable--and believing it yourself. Acceptance is not agreement. And Scott, don't worry--you'll learn the truth about eriador soon enough. Since my words started this semantic argument, I will attempt to end it. Eriador is loc...

Dune

I didn't know where to post this, tried Book Club but it said moderators only. So anyway, I saw the movie 1984 movie DUNE not too long ago and I loved it. I am curious about the book by Frank Herbert. Has anyone here read DUNE and would you recommend it to an OSC fan such as myself? Also, I have Net...

Seriously, I am a strong Christian, please tolerate me. I accept your different views on God. One of those clauses is a lie. I don't see how those 2 statements are even contradictory. The 1st statement just means I believe strongly that God exists and that Jesus is his Son. The 2nd statement just m...

Scott, do you believe in any medicine at all? Because if you do, that sounds like a contradiction. Yes I do believe in medicine, I see no contradiction at all. Unnatural is something that is contrary to the laws of nature, like immortality would be. I never said I was against all things that are un...

Were I an atheist, I don't think I'd want my opinion to be seen as a "different view of God" because the wording makes it sound like I'm wrong. "different view on 'anything'" sounds neutral to me so I fail to see how that particular wording implies anything. Believing in no God is one view on God, ...

Re: "Different views on God"

Scott's post in the Fundies thread made me think about this.
I said "I accept your different views on God" meaning I accept the right to have any view on God.

You can believe God does not exist.
You can believe in Allah.
I accept your different beliefs, but I may not agree with them.

Unnatural? unethical?
Please, explain.
I think it is unnatural to prevent the deterioration of the human body. Physical immortality is not natural.

Natural is: birth -> life -> death.

It is unethical as well. Overpopulation for one. I don't have the strength to explain right now, I'm tired :)

Jota, I would disagree. I think that life absolutely has meaning. I don't believe that there is some higher meaning, but there's a difference between saying that there is no higher, god-given meaning and that there is no meaning at all. I'm sorry but I wanted to hear about personal meaning of life....

Meaning of life

This isn't a thread about the general concept of the meaning of life, it's more about personal meaning. I want meaning in my life. I am not suicidal, depressed or even sad. I just want to have a sense of purpose. I believe each person has their own unique sense of personal meaning. I don't have chil...

On the grand scale of human civilization, I think the vast majority of us don't matter. I think the only ones who do matter are the inventors and the researchers who's work actually advance society.
